We have recorded a set of 15 exercises to help you to reengineer your relationship with your Monkey.

These exercises build on those you may have seen in the Misaligned Monkey Book. The numbers loosely coincide exercise by exercise but these sessions go further and take the opportunity presented by detailed audio guidance to build more sophisticated technique. Best listened to with headphones where you will not be disturbed each session guides through a process to achieve the objectives outlined. As with the book, the exercise are sequential and each builds on the previous sessions to help you set up and then reengineer your existing relationship with your Monkey.

Which ever route you choose to make this happen whether it’s  a DIY plan based on the book exercises or a guided experience based on signing up for the challenge,  it’s a good idea to do all you can to evaluate your results effectively.

For this reason it’s also a good idea to have a journal and record key moments that reveal change is happening, likewise a weekly score from the Monkey relationship survey  provides you with clear scores that let you see your progressive achievements.

A brief overview of each exercise follows –  You can also download or  listen to this guide as an audio Introduction to Challenge Exercises

This is a critical stage and its important to have completed the other three exercises to your own satisfaction first. Exercise 6 Moving to view point three

Based on the previous exercise experiences, this recording starts to build our ability to step back and look more effectively at what is really happening. We use what we have done so far to move together to sense our world from View Point Three. It’s the start of creating the option to use this space for our future development of the relationship with our Monkey.

Exercise 8 Exploring Interruptions and distractions

This recording helps you start to look closely at your Monkeys’ interruptions’ and distractions using the three identified Monkey drivers:

  • Keeping us Safe
  • Defending our Accepted Values
  • Finding and Fixing things to need to be fixed

As before be aware that these recordings build your reactions, skills and capability as you progress through them. Each experience builds towards the next throughout the whole series and It’s worth listening to the whole session. Our Objective is to begin to see the nature of your Monkey’s purpose as it manifests in the nature of the interruption and distraction that they offer.

Exercise 9 Making a List

This recording is different it is a conscious exercise completed with paper and a pen. The recording is designed to listen to as you make your first list of what you really want your life to be like. If you already have one of these this session helps you check and evolve what you already have.

The recording lasts about 25 minutes.

The big message in this exercise is about trusting the process so just start by writing something down. Don’t judge or evaluate that comes later. The challenge timetable recommends you repeat this exercise 3 times in week 5 and in week 7. This gives you the time and space to evolve and change what you have over the sessions included in your challenge timetable.

There is no substitute for clarity here. The better you understand what you really want the easier it is for your Monkey to help and easier for you to understand what help the Monkey brings. It’s a process and repetition works. If you have struggled with this before the audio contains a number of suggestions and categories you can use to get started.

Our Objective is to evolve a list or statement that you believe accurately represents your perfect life. This in turn lets you and your Monkey understand your purpose or destination with a high degree of certainty.

Exercise 10a Preparation for the first formal chat

This recording works in the same way as Exercise 9, it is also a conscious exercise completed with paper and a pen. Firstly, it lets you think through and achieve a state of preparedness. Doing this also provides a message to your Monkey about your level of commitment.

This session gives you the time to formally think about four key areas of your message to your Monkey:

  • Where to ‘meet’
  • A simple short-term destination you could agree on
  • Rules of engagement

Which together help you start to visualising the meeting going well.

As before be aware that these recordings build your reactions, skills and capability as you progress through them. Each experience builds towards the next throughout the whole series and It’s worth listening to the whole session. You can see them as a gentle staircase taking you carefully up towards the final exercises

The recording lasts about 25 minutes.

The challenge timetable recommends you complete this exercise only once in week 6.

Our Objective is to think through consciously of what you want to say and how you want to say it.

Exercise 10b More of and Less of with your Monkey

This exercise sees us engaging with the Monkey to consider a specific issue together. This is part of discerning what you really want your life to be like and this exercise poses the simple question of “what do you want more of or what do you want less of? Completing this exercise at View Point three with your Monkey can yield surprising and life changing results.

The recording lasts about 25 minutes.

The challenge timetable recommends you complete this exercise in weeks 5,6 and 9.

Our objective is to create a list of what you would like to see more of or less of or both and then use this to check and hone your view of what you really want your life to be like. It helps you both move together towards a better understanding of what a successful coherent and aligned result would be. And, it provides a check and balance for exercise 12 a and b.

11 The First Formal Chat

Earlier we asked you to be aware that these recordings build your reactions, skills and capability as you progress through them. Each experience builds towards the next throughout the whole series and It’s worth listening to the whole session. You can see them as a gentle staircase taking you carefully up towards the final exercises. We are now at the final exercise set and your developed skills now need to be put to good use. This session is about using what we have created so far to formally start your relationship with your Monkey.

Off course you both knew you were going here all along as you read the book and worked through the recordings but there is something significant and helpful about completing this formal launch session. It will not escape you how important it is to a good idea on how you want your life to be before completing this session. You may even wish to review your list from exercise 9 again before starting.

The recording lasts about 25 minutes.

The challenge timetable recommends you complete this exercise in week 7

Our Objective is to leave both you and the Monkey clear on the possibility reengineering the relationship provides, sold on the value of doing it and your own commitment to the process and with a simple short-term objective in mind.

Exercise 12 A Future Pacing – The Destinations

In this exercise we pull together all your work in previous sessions. It’s a longer session running at 35 minutes which provides the time for a guided session to walk out together with your Monkey to contemplate your future.

The challenge timetable recommends you complete this exercise firstly in week 8 and then again 3x in week 9, 3x in week 10 and 1x in weeks 11 and 12.

Our Objective is to leave both you and the Monkey clear on the future you are both working towards. It represents a major achievement in realignment and is the penultimate achievement  in the reengineering of your relationship together.

Exercise 12 B Future Pacing The Plan

In this exercise we again pull together all your work in previous sessions. Like exercise 12 A it is also a longer session running at 35 minutes. This provides the time for a guided session to walk out together with your Monkey to contemplate your future and then return noticing what elements your plan for success might include.

The challenge timetable recommends you complete this exercise firstly in week 8 and then again 1x in week 9, 3x in week 10 and 1x in weeks 11 and 12.

Our Objective is to leave both you and the Monkey clear on both the future you are both working towards and your plan to deliver it. It compliments exercise 12 A representing a further major achievement in realignment and completes the picture of your destination and your plan to deliver it

Exercise 13 The Relationship Survey Exercise 14 Plans organisation and set up

These exercises are completed together firstly before you start ad secondly on the last day of each week for the whole challenge period.

Exercise 13 is completed online. You should use it to plot your journey with your Monkey. We recommend you take the survey before you start and then on the last day of each of the 12 weeks.

Ideally record your scores in your journal or share them on line on our community page. It’s important to note that scores typically drop over the first few weeks as you become more aware of the existing relationship before steadily climbing higher to the end of the challenge period.

Exercise 14 This is the admin and organising activity. We suggest you take a moment before you start to think about plan and commit to your 12-week challenge. This may include booking a 30-minute slot each day in your diary when you intend to complete the daily exercise. We recommend you review your plan on the last day of each week.

Exercise 15 Noticing and Expectancy

This exercise is a full-time activity. As we arrive at the last two weeks of the challenge, we have honed our ability to notice and consider what is really going on. Although we still complete formal activity in weeks 11 and 12 days 1, 3 and 5 are ‘free experience’ days where you are encouraged to remain vigilant noticing what is happening with respect to your Monkey and the interactions between you both. This exercise lays the foundation for part of an ongoing practice.
